Job Time

Recently I looked, found, was offered, and accepted a position at Zumobi as a Senior Software Engineer. They do mobile applications primarily for the iPhone but they are making a foray into the Android market so that is where I come in. I am super excited about the job. As some of you know, though, it means I will have much less time to dedicate to working on the start-up I helped found which makes this all bittersweet.

MokaSocial

So what does this mean for MokaSocial? Hopefully yet another chapter as my partners and I continue to move forward with our projects and plans. Today we released Gadgetopia, a news, pic, and video aggregator for all things gadgets. It’s based on the model behind iHeartCelebs: free with ads support. Gadgetopia is our first project to use a package system I came up with that allows us to basically rapid deploy similar apps within a couple hours. Sure, they are similar in feel but our goal is content delivery of things people actually want.

The Kids and Stuff

Harrison’s been teething lately and it has made sleep a rare commodity. Last night, for example, he was really upset and wouldn’t sleep unless he was attached to Crystal. She’s had some more experience living with sleep deprivation than I but she suffers nonetheless.

I’ve been watching Henry and Helen playing together and it thrills me to see them using their imagination. I see some of the things they build, the games they create, or things they draw on paper and it impresses me. Their energy levels are hard to keep up with but Crystal and I keep up as best as we can. They are growing so fast. I think about how quickly time goes by and that I really would like to spend as much of my free time with them as I can. Henry is almost five. That little boy has been with me for five years. Helen for two. Just wow.

I feel like things have been frantic all around the last couple weeks. I suppose it was the job hunting and worrying. Now that it is over and we’ll see some money after the new year I would love to take the family on a trip to a forest or somewhere new. Maybe the zoo. A farm. Camping. Anything really. We all need to get out and do something! I’d like to set up my recording equipment and try and make some music. I feel like I need a way to release some creative energy that isn’t work. It’s all sitting here waiting for me to unpack I just need to find the will and time to do it.

Cooking!

One thing that we really lacked was a decent kitchen in our apartment. For a family of five cooking takes on a much more production-like feel and standing inside that cramped space I often wondered how the cube dwellers could live off of instant, boxed, or simple to make foods. But anyway, since moving I’ve had a much more pleasant experience. I hope over the coming months I get to share my experiences and recipes because, well, I love to share food. And if I can’t do it in person then I will most certainly share virtually!

Crystal and I have both been at this too. It saves money and helps us practice some important skills. She’s made, for example, several pies, bakes, cookies, roasts, and chilies. I’ve made a similarly wide range of dishes.

I’ve struggled with hamburgers and fried chicken for years now. I really like the fried hamburger rather than a flame broiled one as I tend to like it juicy. A couple years back I made some crazy yummy pan fried hamburgers that would be awesome if they weren’t over or under cooked which is hard to do. Recently I grabbed some wax paper and made patties by rolling ground hamburger into eight by eight inch sheets about a fifth of an inch thick. That proved to be a much better cheeseburger!

The fried chicken has also turned out better. It’s all about the flour mix. I recently made one using thyme, salt, and pepper going heavy on the last two and then pan frying a few thighs and it was amazing. I suppose its a trial and error thing. We’ve made risotto for years now and following the mantra of “over seasoning” I made yesterday a delicious risotto using leftover roast turkey, fresh herbs, whole brown rice, carrots, onion, and celery topped with chicken stock.

Healthy Eating

I realize that it sound like we’ve been cooking a lot of fatty foods but these are treats every so often. We’re been trying to steer our eating habits to whole, organic, minimally processed foods wherever we can; drinking lots of water. That isn’t always possible but we try. I myself am happy to report that since I’ve stopped drinking as much and eating less food, I’ve lost about 30 pounds. Now lift three 10 pound sacks of potatoes at the grocery store and that is quite a bit of heft off my jowl and check bones! If you shop around, watch sales, and spend more time cooking you don’t really spend all that much more on your grocery budget. Some neat videos to watch to get a different perspective on eating are:

  • King Corn — Interesting video about how two grads tried to raise an acre of corn and then tried to understand where all of it goes.
  • Food Matters — A little health nutty but some interesting ideas about nutrition.
  • The Future of Food — The farmer in this movie is awesome. I wish he was my neighbor. Otherwise, get ready to be disturbed about the conflict of interest in our FDA, DoA, EPA, patent law, genetic engineering, and disease.
  • Food, Inc. — You know, McDonald’s and the industrialized chain that supports it. And other things.

Of course, each of these come with the usual grain of salt saying. It is good to have more information to make informed decisions.

Finally, Last.fm

Have I mentioned how awesome and tubular Last.fm is? It’s a free service much like Pandora in that it tracks what you listen to, like, dislike, and then suggests music and plays it to you. I’ve gotten into it so heavy I’ve started sharing it here on my site. I’ve gotten to hear so many new artists from different genres all just by cruising channels around me. It’s free and it is awesome. Okay, and fine, it’s old news but for me I think it just required I sit and just give it a try!

With a 4G phone I can now be on the go and listen to Last.fm or any other streaming audio source. Dream come true!

Thanksgiving Wonderland

I think the real news this week is the six or so inches of snow which accumulated on and around our home. The roads are solid ice: we’re going nowhere. We’ve had to bundle up to stay warm as we don’t want to use the heat more than we have to. Fortunately we went and did some grocery shopping before we got snowed in!

And while we’re talking about saving money can you guess how much it costs to run lights in a house this big? We were recently analyzing our electric bill and went through the house. One 60-watt light bulb costs about $2.25 to run all month, 10 hours a day. Well, our dining room chandelier has nine bulbs! If we switch to CFLs we’re looking at about $0.56 a month. It is significant when you add up all the bulbs. We’re not about to go throw out all our bulbs but as they burn out we’re switching them out.

It’s been really stressful. Things have gotten really tight. Crystal and I spend a lot of time at odds. Things aren’t as they seem with what we’re doing and even though we’re working on a few deals only one has panned out to be a paying gig. I am currently, actively, and frantically looking for work. No one said starting a business was going to be easy. At the same time I think doing this with three kids and the responsibility that comes with that is a huge burden. Once you start worrying more about things like rent and second guessing whether that book you bought was a mistake it starts to gnaw at everything.

On a good note we got our iHeartCelebs application done. We finished the first version of RentNotices. Both need a couple tweaks here and there but two more finished applications. I checked in the start for four more iHeart branded apps today — beer, gadgets, fashion, and videogames. I hope they do well. We met with our potential clients out from up North and we did some consulting on another.

Crystal has been getting the house ready for Thanksgiving. We’re having family over. Her dad and step-mom are bringing the meat and we’re making the pies. Someone else is bringing the yams and beans. It’ll be nice to have everyone contribute. I am a bit nervous about our nephew. I think of the Tasmanian devil from Looney Tunes. Touch, move, break, rip, shake, throw, stomp; seek and destroy. The parenting style of his parents, my brother-in-law and his wife, is different from ours to put it nicely.

Anyway, check out my tweets. I’ve been doing the micro-blogging thing for the daily thoughts. I set up a home network, DNS server, DAAP share, file share, and DLNA server complete with Nagios. I was quite proud of myself. I need to upgrade the machine though. It has a single core 10MB LAN card. I might be getting a free box soon from a friend. Funny, I’ve had this machine running for a couple years now and only recently have I been able to work on it. I guess when you take out 4 hours of commuting out of your schedule you have time to do things other then work, eat, and sleep.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and stay warm.

Vans, Work, and Shit Telcos

Thanks to some chance encounters and my mom-in-law we’ve purchased a massive beast of a van. A bus. A 1994 Dodge Ram 350. Something like that. It seats eight, costs over $100 to fill the 35 gallon tank, and sits in one of the four garage spots. It’s in decent shape with some paint problems, a couple little leaks, and some annoyances that come with a 15 year old vehicle but finally the family has something to all pile into without having anyone sit on the floor. Guests: yes. Hauling: yes. Fuel economy: 15 mpg ish.

I’ve been cranking out tons of code for some projects. Lots of good stuff. It takes time and I admit a little longer to go from zero to full fledged application but then I realize it is just me and John here and there and I feel better. Koa is off in Europe for a vacation. Once everyone is back we’ll kick ass and take names. Interestingly, I’ve found myself doing a wee bit of game design lately and it is quite fun. Interesting at least. I purchased a book (kind of a work expense to help me learn) title Head First Design Patterns. I think a few of us have it but I needed something to read that got me thinking about some of the deeper details of making things work especially now that we’re building more complex things from scratch. Interestingly, though, we’re actually already implementing some of the ideas on our own. I think we know what we’re doing!

We’ve all had quite a few sniffles this week. I’ve been with a sore throat, fever, and bull shit since Wednesday. Helen has especially had a runny nose. Harrison is teething and has been quite grumpy! And while I just mentioned books I found another titled Home Cheese Making. I mentioned it before but I really want to try and make some cheese!

Working from home has been a huge blessing and we’re continuing to believe that we can get this thing off the ground so we don’t have to go out and go back to work for other folks. Nothing is defeat. Just keep plowing along. Which leads me to a quote I heard recently, “If you want to be a millionaire, talk to millionaires.” It’s quite interesting on a few levels and in my experience it rings true. Now, it is easy to dismiss it because of the connotation but we can apply it to anything. If you want to be a plumber, talk to plumbers. If you want to be a red neck. If you want to be well balanced. If you want to be on drugs. On and on – ad nauseam.

Who you associate with. The demeanor, expectations, and values you carry to and from conversations. The expectations you have of others and yourself. It all impacts where we are headed. Maybe it seem obvious but in my own station in life if I wish to self improve and achieve better continually setting my bar higher I must also seek what there is beyond where I am at.

We’re where we’re at in life because of decisions we’ve made. Knowing that we can make changes or do things to influence our future. Taking personal responsibility for ourselves is one of those things that seem passé these days. I am happy where I am at but I think I am beginning to realize that I have much more power over my life, God willing, than I once realized and this is a good thing!

I wanted to close that CenturyLink gets title of shit telco from me. I realize that I should have read every line of their fine print before subscribing to the DSL service and I am willing to take responsibility for that mistake by admitting my mistake. At the same time, though, this company should be admonished and its employees ashamed for working for an entity which hides contractual obligations such as term in the bowls of some massive agreement. Companies that do business this way garner no loyalty from me and I will therefor cheerfully pay the $400 early termination fee and take my business elsewhere, if I so choose.

Kids, I’m sorry there won’t be much of a Christmas this year. Daddy made a mistake. *shakes fist at assholes*

More Unpacking

This will be the end of our third week here and I was finally able to pull the Mustang into the garage. Yes! Now both cars are inside. We moved the filing cabinet upstairs today and have gotten through all the books and book cases. There are a handful of boxes scattered throughout the office/upstairs area and in the garage. Mostly keepsakes or things that simply don’t have a place for them.

I reinstalled Vista on my laptop. It was temping to do a straight Linux install but I like to be able to take my gaming with me on road trips and LAN parties. It’s convenient to say the least. Besides, once I get Ant working it seems to be a pretty good development machine. I ordered a new battery for it as the old one doesn’t even register on my computer. What is the lifespan of lappy batteries anyway, a year?

I would like to setup my studio next but I will wait until I get another desk or some sort of small table. I don’t want to crowd myself! I have a new bag of Golden Cavendish I am doing to go try tonight – maybe tomorrow. I’ve been bumming Nate and using up the dried scraps I have. It’s been shameful.

Out of curiosity I’d like to mention that I love Aladdin lamps. I own a model 23 for some time now and the mantle has been missing. A while ago I tried to replace it only to find that the manufacturer’s machine had been relocated to some Polynesian island and they had made them incorrectly. The lamp will still work but the mantle take it from bright to bright aura from Heaven. Eventually I’d like to get a table lamp and a couple hanging ones for the work shops or large spaced areas. Soon enough!

Working on Things

First a quick lesson in Java (for myself). This was a half day lesson that I feel sheepish to admit but I figure hey, let me share! Below I will create an ArrayList which will contain a bunch of like objects. They could be strings – it doesn’t matter. Then we will add those lists to some other objects or consume them in some fashion.

public void mySuperExample() {
    // A generic list
    ArrayList<SomeObj> someObjList = new ArrayList<SomeObj>();

    // Start off by creating or using generic objs
    SomeObj obj1 = SomeObj.createMe();
    obj1.setSomeAttribute("My super object");
    obj1.setAnotherAttribute(3);

    SomeObj obj2 = SomeObj.createMe();
    obj2.setSomeAttribute("My other super object");
    obj2.setAnotherAttribute(2);

    // Add the objects to the list
    someObjList.add(obj1);
    someObjList.add(obj2);

    // A couple different objects use a copy of the list
    ConsumingObj.useMe(someObjList);
    AnotherConsumer.useMe(someObjList);
}

Now, this looks perfectly fine for ConsumingObj and AnotherConsumer are both unique as are both instances on someObjList. Oh, here is where it gets good. The members of each of the instances of someObjList are identical! The toString() methods have been wonderful to figure this out but basically each of these items were referenced by the parents which ultimately meant that when I thought I had different sets of identical items I had different sets referencing the same items. Anyway, now that that’s over I can move on. It was interesting. This and recently having learned about creating callbacks/event handlers. I love programming and learning!

Moving on, we are pretty much settled at our new house. I road the SoundRunner on Monday which was free (for the inaugural day) and it was quite convenient. My commute wasn’t much shorter than it was in Fife and I think it costs about the same maybe a dollar or two more. But the important part was that there exists a passenger boat straight to Kingston. There is also the Bainbridge Island and Kingston regular ferries so there are like 3 different ways to get to Seattle and back using public transportation.

Although I love the house and location I do lament a little the fact that it is much harder to do some of the shopping I like to do. There is no Nordstrom (or Rack), European butchers, and general conveniences of having everything close by. It’s okay because we never went to those places on a daily basis and they are accessible if I want to go to Seattle. I will take this over urban living any day. The main detractor is being away from my mom and dad and other folks that would visit more frequently. Out here, apart from Crystal’s mom who lives close by, no one has come out to see us. I suspect it will stay that way.

I’ve had enjoyment out of getting acquainted with living in more space and having to do things like monitor gas usage, yard work (what little there is), cooking on gas, playing music loud, and sleeping in complete silence. Today a heavy fog filled the Sound around our area and I heard the rhythmic announcement from the fog horn. Sound of music compared to what we heard in Fife.

I am currently trying to acquire something to reduce the heat on gas stoves. There are these iron plates you can find about eight inches in diameter. With such a huge kitchen the desire to cook is stronger then ever before. I am checking into making cheese and smoking some meats. Soon enough! I got a shelf for the garage to help stow some extra supplies and foods. We’re hoping that when a need arises we’re never caught without a way to take care of ourselves.

Our business is coming along nicely in that we’re generating some income but more importantly we’re solid at work. I am working from home most of the week and my partner John is also doing huge work. We’re trying to make steady improvements to released software and create new stuff. I am working on a game right now. John’s working on an aggregation software. We also did some work to shore up our website and the various places we get found on the Internet.

I’ve been playing World of Tanks here and there. I finally earned enough points to purchase a Panther tank so it’s been super exciting to play that. I really enjoy the aspect to playing history. I think the game is pretty shallow and although the developers say they will be adding more stuff I am going to wait and see. Interestingly a lot of MMORPGs have been going free. After Final Fantasy XIV bombed (they got a 4 out of 10 rating on some sites) I gave up on the MMO scene. Everquest II and Lord of the Rings Online are now free to play minus a few features. Amazing actually. “Freemium” seems to be the next direction MMOs are taking. I think I remember someone at ArenaNet saying that the money earned seems to be about the same as paid subscription. We’ll see. Speaking of ArenaNet, the media blitz in anticipation of Guild Wars 2 is growing but I admit I am still tired of the graphics and play style the studio puts out. Whether I worked for them or not, I always felt that something was off playing the games they made.

Life Reassembly

We’re all moved but the reassembly of our life begins. This was one crazy weekend. Busy, stressful, painful, and the like. Thank you goes out to all those that helped us! Seriously, it was and is appreciated and I will happily reciprocate any time. It would have been even more dreadful has you all not shown up. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We’re in the process of finding a rhythm in the new place which will probably take a month or two. The kids seem to be adapting to the increase in space. We’ve been unpacking and trying to gain back some sort of normalcy. Thanks to Crystal who is busy setting everything up. The kid’s bathroom, the kitchen, and our bedroom are probably the most unpacked. Things are beginning to look normal and we’re getting all the pieces put together. It looks like the office/bonus room will be the last to come together. For now we’ve got this massive “great room” that is empty except for the piano. It sounds great in the cavernous room but that’s just it. Eventually we’d like to get some couches and a rug. Not on a founder’s salary (for now)!

I drove around yesterday morning to drop off our cable box and modem and then picked up my new frames. They’re orange with blue front and sides.

There’s a lot of details spinning in my head right now. How to work out commuting, budgeting, garbage collection, mail service; stuff that we’ve gone over but we need to really hunker down and figure out. Until that happens I am going to feel overwhelmed.

In the mean time, we continue to work hard on Flicka and are getting close to releasing version 1.1.1 probably later this week. We want to move on to other things to start expanding our portfolio. There are some other things in the works that I can’t write about just yet but I will share as soon as I can!

Moving Day

Well tomorrow we move to our new home in Kingston. We are super excited. We are looking to get this move over with I suppose as anyone would. The stay here at Tarmigan Apartments in Fife has been fine for apartment living. I suppose the management and staff has been fairly good for us. They tend to be prompt and friendly. With the usual apartment living come the obvious problems like noise, smells, lack of parking, and other annoyances. The location, though, is particularly difficult. Across the street from a FedEx distribution warehouse with hundreds of trucks going in and out and on a street with several busy warehouses it is a constant whirl of trucks, road noise, and the like. To make things even worse, there is a railroad track by which trains go sometimes every half our blasting their horns at the grade. Further, it is on a flood plain and lahar path which first, if the Puyallup River threatens its levies (as it did the winter we moved in) you get evacuated and second, when Mount Rainier blows you have a sprinkled network of air raid sirens to warn you. We were living during an upgrade of Valley Avenue and 70th so the noise has been particularly annoying.

We’ve gotten everything in boxes. Sure there are a few loose things here and there but I think we’re going to be okay. Tomorrow morning I get up and go get a 26-foot truck. The fish tank is probably the only daunting task left but hopefully we can get it done while we’re loading. Our plan is to load it into a van. With all the help that’s coming I think loading will be quick. Crystal has done 90% of the packing and the sheer effort of cleaning and getting us ready for all this is amazing.

Anyway, next time I write will be once I am settled in. See ya after the move!

Flicka: First Review (and its Great!)

We released Flicka on September 15th this year and have gotten a fantastic review. Of course, that review is for version 1.0 which doesn’t include quite a few fixes and updates we added in version 1.1 a week later.

To quote the reviewer:

…this app is definitely the best flickr app for Android – no doubt about it.

With how much work and effort we’ve put in over the last year part time while working full time, having babies, having fiancées leaving us; I think we’ve gotten a lot done and want to continue working to bring up our ratings and make ourselves be the Flickr application for Android.

I know my partners and I are super grateful for all the support and positive feedback we’ve gotten so far. We’re moving along and working to get version 1.2 and beyond done as quickly as possible.

Taking A Plunge (or Two)

What a ride my family and I have been on the last few weeks. A few big things have been going on. About a month or so ago we had started looking to move into a house. Right now there is five of us in this 1,200 square-foot apartment which is really cramped for us. So anyway, this house in Kingston seemed perfect. We found a few others and looked at them. Well anyway, the owner found another interested party and went with them. It was a timing thing. We moved on not eagerly pursuing other places. I mean, we were still looking but we had sort of resigned to the idea we would just stick it out a few more months here, save some cash, and then move when we were a little more comfortable. Our lease was coming up and we may as well stick out another term.

Then about a couple weeks later he calls us and says that the potential buyers had flaked out on him and that we were next in line. Nate and I went out and looked at it and for the price it really seems like a great deal. Well, since looking at it we’ve decided to go for it. We’ve packed up most of our home into boxes. We’re lined up for October 1st as the move in day. More space (~3,300 square feet), four car garage, a view of the Sound, and a suitable yard. We’re very happy. I just need to make sure Comcast gets put in ASAP! So yeah, we’re moving. No more smokers, pot smoke, screaming matches, loud cars, busy roads, parking spot wars, and whatever.

We’ve finally launched Flicka. For those willing to spend the cost of a mocha to help support our efforts, go buy it! Rate it five stars! We need every bit of help to get people interested and excited about our product. Right now we’re focused on version 1.1 which will add some features and fix a couple bugs. It has been awesome to learn and release code. We’ve been using a lot of interesting tools to get things to a state where they are not crashing. For example, in addition to testing on different devices, programmed tests (Robotium like Selenium), and unit tests; we discovered Monkey which is literally like a monkey mashing buttons and doing all sorts of things to your application. Anyway, with MokaSocial now being legit and official we need to release new products and get ourselves to a place where we can work on mobile full time. There are several things “in the pipe” so stay tuned.
