Fishing Trip

I finally bought a freshwater fishing license. The first time in my life. The $26 price tag was a little higher than I expected especially since it isn’t really for an entire year. I also bought Henry a pole and a life preserver. We drove down to Lacey and went fishing with our friends Israel and his daughter Brooklyn and our Henry and Helen. Crystal and Rae Anne went to the bead store with Harrison and shopped there for an hour.

The amazing thing was that I caught two fish. Two of them! Two 10 inchers. All trout. The first we kept because it had swallowed the hook and he had to basically kill it to get the hook out. The second we let go only to watch it sink to the bottom. It had a hook in its lip so it should have survived but I guess it had been out of the water too long. Israel caught three fish, one had gotten away as we tried to catch it into the net. They were a bit larger.

After we got back to their house he showed me how to gut and clean them. It was relatively easy and I was happy to do it. We all enjoyed a BBQ and sat around talking. It was all very refreshing to spend a sunny Saturday outdoors doing stuff. I have the fish in my refrigerator ready to cook up tomorrow for dinner. It was nice to go somewhere as a family and have everyone get a chance to do something they want.

Rae and Izz are expecting a son in a couple months. They’ve already picked the name Jacob. We’re excited for them.

May I Present to You

On Tuesday the 27th of April the third baby – fifth member of the Hrádek clan was born. We weighed in at just under nine pounds and just under 22 inches tall. He’s got all his fingers and toes. He is beautiful. He weighed in at 8lbs 14oz, was just under 22 inches tall, and had the signs of a 36 week old baby even though he was 2 weeks past due. Crystal’s oven just takes a little longer!

Crystal and I, especially Crystal of course, had a very difficult experience but all in all everything turned out fine. We are now recuperating, the baby’s schedule is normalizing, and the other two kids are getting acquainted. It was quite a marathon. I think we figured it was between 60 and 72 hours of labor with a couple minor stalls in there. I cut the cord and we were surprised that it was a boy. Amazing. Just amazing. And we were all so sure it was a girl!

Crystal has said that this will be the last baby. I agree. The stresses of transporting us is already becoming apparent. We had a dry run this Friday and I followed her and the kids to a near by store. It was a challenge. We see Safeway.com in our future!

I’ll post more details soon as I digest what all has happened.

Names, Names, Names (names)…

Our new baby was born on Tuesday (yesterday [wow it feels like its been a month]) and we’re debating names. Before I go into all the details I’d like to share with you what we’re debating. Now we have some rules we’re trying to follow:

  • Language Portable — We want something that will fairly easily go from English to Czech to Polish to German to respect heritages and parents.
  • Not Too Common — We want something that won’t be every day common. Names like Jacob, Michael, Emma, Olivia; these are the rage. We want something somewhat unique.
  • Not Strange — We don’t want to hamper our kids’ lives with strange, exotic, unpronounceable, or weird names. Kind of keeping it stylish and on the edge of interesting without making folks wonder WTF we were thinking. Just because my great so-and-so was named that doesn’t make it okay. Other no noes are things that sound okay but are strange as names. Naming your kid after a geographic feature like Canyon or a profession like Tanner or Trucker.
  • Potentially Trendy — This is the hardest one. We want a name that is cute on a kid and that child grows up into an adult with the same name. Maybe 2020′s baby name statistics will put one of our choices in the top 10, that’s okay.
  • Pass Taste Test — We sit and talk about the name, shout it in the car, pretend it is the name we chose: does it still seem okay? Does one of us hate it?
  • Non-Horrible Meaning — Miriam (Hebrew) “Uncertain, maybe bitter”. Who the thinks that would be a good name for their child? I mean, it doesn’t have to be something like “Awesome slayer of things hippie” but yeah, you get the idea.

Taking these simple rules we’ve created for ourselves, I think Henry and Helen fit in quite nicely. So now that we at least know it is a boy we’ve got here are some ideas we’ve put together:

  • Harrison It means son of Harry but Harry means ruler of the house. That’s fine. Nothing bizarre. Harrison is a solid name which translates into Czech and Polish but the problem is that for those languages its the same as Henry. There aren’t many Harrisons out there. We used Harry to shorten it but then it starts to get confused with Henry.
  • Hugo A latinized form of Hugh which means something around heart, mind, and spirit. There are no direct Slavic variants but that’s okay as it still is fairly portable as-is. It seems more suave than the name from which it was derived. I don’t think Crystal is too excited about it.

That’s all we have for now. Our parents all liked John. My mom suggested Hubert. We like Anton which is the Slavic of Anthony. The problem is the pronunciation. Slavs pronounce it ahn-TON which is the form we like. We pretty much bet everyone would see that and pronounce it AHN-tawn. Worse, it could become… Tony. Barf.

We have an unspoken “H” name rule. We’d like to stick with “H” names to fit with Henry and Helen but it’s not completely required much like the name portability rule.

Anyway, that’s all we have. The midwife will be here either tomorrow or the day after and we need to have our name figured out. What a decision!

Bust Out the Tub

We’re on what, day 3 of contractions. First day had a stall as did the subsequent days. Today’s stall was short and the contractions are the most intense they’ve been. We’re at 5cm… so about half way there. We’re really hoping the last half goes much faster. We’ve busted out the birthing tub, filled it with water, and labor in it has been much easier for Crystal. Everyone has been supportive. Nana took the kids out for the second day in a row. It’s a huge help.

I’ve tried to feel better myself. I contracted a virus of sorts which gave me shivers, amazing fatigue, fever, and a horrible sore throat. What timing!

It’s Getting Close

Contractions are 4 to 5 minutes apart lasting between 45 and 60 seconds. This started about 9 o’clock. Hopefully we’ll be having a baby tonight or tomorrow as Crystal isn’t able to sleep through these!

Flicka Dev Video

Just a taste. It’s interesting to note that 3G seems slower than dial-up Internet. Also, it’s tough to shoot a video holding the camcorder with your chin!

The second video is Koa’s version which is much better put together.

It’s been useful to identify several key issues we still need to address before we can launch. Caching is ok but needs tweaking, Performing tasks needs some sort of visual queue. Error handling needs a soft fail and missing Internet connections needs to fail gracefully.

More as it comes. We’re already working on our next project after Flicka: IHeartCelebs! Yeah it’s only a shell but we’re already cooking things up.

No B-Day Baby

Unfortunately we still have no new baby. Crystal’s birthday came and went. We went to the mall today with the kids to give us something fun to do so Crystal can walk around and look at things. We checked out the Rainforest Cafe which the kids really had fun at. All the walking made her really sore and we even had some contractions during the ride home. Sadly nothing yet. The kids were very well behaved, though. We went up and down a few escalators, let momma shop for herself a little, and played in the play area. At this point we’re doing everything to get labor to start and keep going. Walking helps. Bumpy car rides. I won’t go into too much more details but yeah, trying it all.

I took Henry to the hardware store and found an extendable bracket to use to hold up the tank hood. At a little over $1.50 I bought three. I am really happy I found them. I was considering cutting aluminum perhaps making something custom. This isn’t perfect but works for a fraction of the cost. Apparently these brackets are used to hang pipe between joists. Henry was quite the helper helping me look and fit the pieces together. He loves to ride in the “daddy car”. I’d like to fit some Helen and daddy time in somewhere. It’s actually been something on our radar lately. Even kids need some private time away from one another or one on one time with a parent. A lot of frustration happens when Henry wants to play with Matchbox cars and Helen plays the unwanted role of Godzilla. Or Helen wants to draw and Henry takes all her paper. We live and learn. I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful family.

I went through and cleaned out my wardrobe today. I hate shopping for clothes. I tend to wake up, throw whatever is at the top of the drawer, and go. Nothing wrong with that. I was simply never replacing clothes with frayed collars, tears, faded t-shirts, and things just not quite the right size. I was liberating and a little scary. I didn’t get rid of everything. I left a pair of oil changing work pants and a couple t-shirts for the same reason. Things like 80′s double-breasted suite jackets, short sweaters, and old yellow undershirts made up most of the pile. It was nice to get rid of the bulk of my Guild Wars t-shirts. I hung on to them because, well, I did work there and all… but they’d become faded and shrunk. Time to move on.

Michael Caine

I’ve also been looking at new glasses as mine are a few years old. I like what I’ve been seeing as Moscot, in particular the Vilda frame. Apparently local places don’t carry much more than everything they think we should think is cool. I am really excited to get away from the thin wire frames and into something a little more chunk: some mid sixties Michael Caine perhaps?

I’ll keep posted as labor starts and gets going full swing. I am extremely grateful to work for a company that understands and accommodates what I’m going through. If this was our first kid things might be easier but Crystal can’t be doubling over from contractions while chasing two kids trying to throw lunch together and keeping some sense of order. I just hope I can help her beyond her expectations.

Facebook Rant

Remember MySpace? Bunches of us joined up and created our own little virtual pads. Customizable, social networking, messaging: it was awesome!

And then came the customizations. The deluge of stupid messages. Uncontrolled filth and lameness. It made the site so unbearable that Facebook (FB) started looking attractive. Today MySpace has been relegated to mini sites for musicians who either can’t afford to create a decent site or… oh I don’t know, have a places for fans to add flair to to their own profiles?

I wanted to mention MySpace because I feel this is the direction FB is heading with its support of ads and applications. The uniform design of FB makes it hugely appealing in that I can traverse “friends” and everything will look fairly clean and conform to some semblance of order. That goes without saying, but lately I’ve become increasingly perturbed by the applications. I love social networking. I connect to my “friends” and get updates on what they’re doing. I connect to my favorite bands and get updates on new music.

Then there are those pesky apps. By design or by the owner’s choice I get spammed multiple times a day about some animal in this app or a new knight in another. Don’t get me started on the craptastic mini apps sharing the owner’s lucky number or whatever. But that isn’t even the worst of it. You see, we’re all in FB to social network. To keep up with one another. To communicate pseudo real time.

No, the insult to injury, the kick below the belt when I am down on the ground is the occasional messages broadcasting some request or plea in regards to one of these horribly annoying messages. “Hey anyone have a pink marshmallow? Please send it to me so I can complete my collection!!!!111 XOXO” Seriously? It’s a symptom of a bigger problem. People are now using FB as a platform to play games and do things that are annoying.

Oh, but isn’t that the point, you ask. It’s perfect, you say. They can network and chat about things while they are sharing their goals inside applications and games. Nope, you just messed up everything cool about FB. You see, I just blocked that person for life. I will never again see anything they say because they’ve just changed the nature of what FB means to me. Now FB has groups and lots of handy ways to make sure people broadcast to those using these applications but it’s too late. They don’t know how to use those features. And worse, I won’t know when they finally figure out to send their lame messages to only those interested in that.

It’s sad because now I have yet another person that I will never hear from again. No “Just paid off our car!” or “He left me…” updates. Nothing. Zip. Ever. Never mind that there are people that sit on their computers all day playing FB games and doing all those horribly lame applications. It’s taken me month to refine my FB profile to give me the updates from people I want to hear about and have no more applications give me a message that so and so’s unlucky number is 3.

And now for the ads. I can see the value of ads if they target you because you and all your friends like Beanie Babies and you get a Beanie Baby ad. Makes sense. Chance are you are more likely to check that out than an ad for an online auto parts shop (or is it?). You can close some ads, tell them to go away, but OMGWTF when I see an ad that says “Chuck Yeagar loves S&M gear from Hustler”. Does this mean that when I “like” McDonald’s all my friends are going to see “Michael likes to eat DBQs at the golden arches”. Wow, that’s intrusive. I have no control over how my profile and identity is used in advertising!

Suddenly now I find myself liking and unliking things not just if I like them but whether or not they will create ads for my so called friends. I like Zzounds or Johnny Cash. Will that create ads for all my contacts? Yes, maybe. Ok, I think I am ok with that. I like Peter Czernich or Martin Perreault. Will my contacts see ads for all the latest latex fashions now? Am I ok with that? Well, for my personal contacts sure but employers? You know the drill. Rather than worrying about this I should just not share anything.

So we’ve just defeated another aspect of FB. Their terms of service (ToS) makes it clear they can do all this. After watching the above video, I realize how effective the data mining and other features that FB has. I’ve never posted political affiliations but apparently after liking some of Ron Paul’s comments and making a couple comments here and there about some of my stances I now see ads for conservative and libertarians groups. Wow, that is interesting to derive that from liking someone’s posts. My friend asked me to join a fan page for a state sponsored environmental agency. No I get socialist and environmentalist ads on my profile. That just drove me crazy. It is something to keep in mind, I suppose, whenever we interact with one of the most popular sites on the web. Should we have to worry about worrying? I don’t know.

Where does this leave you and me? I feel and hope that something will come along to replace FB. Early last year MySpace let most of it’s staff go and FB took the throne (arguably even before this time). Something that is more in line with our concerns about privacy and more in line with social networking. I realize that if everyone clamps down and shares nothing about themselves we don’t have much of a social network. That’s ok! For every person that shares nothing we’ve got plenty of people willing to share more. But rather than making things impossible for us to regulate who and how we share things we need more control. The technology is out there. The need to monetize and return on investment must be removed. We need a social networking site that doesn’t need to answer to shareholders, generate revenue, or perhaps have some subversive roles as suggested by the video.

It will be painful but it needs to happen. When will we see our next MySpace or Facebook?

Minor Contractions

I stayed home a couple times this week to help Crystal out. The doctor due date was April 13th. We figured April. It’s probably a range ± a couple weeks. The birthing tub is on standby, the cameras are charged, the house is being maintained in an orderly state, and the kids are working hard to undo it all!

We’re now actively trying all mythical and real methods to induce labor. Nothing wonky but some of the stuff works. Last night around one we started getting minor contractions which was super exciting. Crystal is having a hard time doing anything. I hope to do my best alleviating pressure and stress so she can allow her body to do its thing.

So, names… uh, well, its worse than with Helen and Henry. We’re not sure about the H theme. It kind of just happened. Now if we go with it we want to feel good about it but I’m suddenly feeling reservations.

Boys: Harrison, Adam,
Girls: Hazel, Hannah, Ada

I’ll add some more ideas as I can think of them.

Fish Tank Extravaganza

I posted a pic or two last post about our new fish tanks. I wanted to share some more about what we’ve done. It’s been really fun to hang out with mom (in-law) who gets all giddy whenever we talk about the marine (saltwater) tank. It looks sharp and we’re really happy with the outcome so far.

We went to several stores and I’ll admit that the start up cost is a bit higher on a marine tank than a freshwater tank when you add salt, a hydrometer, live sand and so on but its not prohibitive, in my opinion. Every store we went to has had really enthusiastic and helpful folks who knew what we’re getting into. They’ve pointed us to the Puget Sound Aquarium Society and we’ve gone to the library and Google to learn a lot.

Also we had our final visit to the midwives. This last Tuesday was the due date. We’re doing everything now to get the baby out!
